New Oil Discoveries in Yemen PDF Print E-mail
Yemen's Petroleum Exploration and Production Authority (PEPA) announced  on 4th of October nine new oil discoveries in seven sectors, which are now being commercially evaluated, with the results to be announced next month after the technical studies and surveys completed.
 
PEPA revealed that the new dicoveries were fount in Alwaia 1 field in sector 41, Obeid field 1 in sector 1, Sharna 1 and Yalin 1 fields in sector 47, and Ghabata-West field 1 in sector 49.
 
A paper presented by PEPA at a meeting, attended by the oil minister, mentioned that discoveries were also also found in the fields of Sarar 1 and Sharma 1 in sea sector 15 near the Hadhramaut coast. The paper also discussed discoveries in the two Hanin fields in sector 71 and in the Wadi Rashim field in sector 33. PEPA  expects new oil discoveries in 42 other oil sectors between 2010 and 2015, during the implementation of its exploration plan.PEPA also stated that six exploration sectors (sectors 51, 53, S1, 9, 43, and S2) have become productive in the past few years.

Currently, oil reserves amount to 10.9 billion barrels, and gas reserves total 18.2 trillion cubic feet. PEPA disclosed that they plan to drill 132 wells during 2009, including 33 exploration wells and 99 production wells.

Earlier in the month, the Ministry of Oil and Minerals and PEPA their first exploration for gas in block No. 18 in the Marib governorate. The Minister of Oil and Minerals, Amir Salim al-Aydarus, clarified that the gas quantities detected in this field are still under study and evaluation.
